College leavers celebrate with fundraiser
July 26, 2012
Staffordshire teenagers marked the end of their college education by raising £670 for young people with cancer.
Nearly 300 students, family, friends and staff attended staff Denstone College Leavers Ball in Uttoxeter. As well as donating to collecting tins at the bar, attendees also raised money through fundraising party games.
The Young Persons’ Unit (YPU) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital provides inpatient care for patients aged 16-25 years old living with cancer.
Miles Norris from Denstone College explains: “The leavers wanted to use their final opportunity at school not to just celebrate their time here but to do some good too.
“The Young Persons’ Unit is particularly close to our hearts. Such a large number of our pupils have had direct experience with cancer, with friends and family affected. This year, one of our leavers, as a boy, battled and survived cancer several times. With the best care available hopefully these young people can be supported and able to battle through,” added Miles.
“The Denstone Leavers of 2012 are proud to be able to support QEHB’s continued good work in this regard”.
Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity supports the YPU by funding services and equipment that are additional to core NHS services. These include massage therapy and guitar lessons, as well as essentials for teenagers such as Playstations and Nintendo Wiis and the latest games.
“The hospital charity provides those added extras that make a huge difference to the lives of military patients and their families. Thank you for your support”
