QEHB innovation wins national award

July 24, 2012

An innovative exercise device – designed to help QEHB military patients – has won a national competition.

The winner of the Make it in Great Britain People’s Choice Award has today been named as Bedflex, a device designed to assist the recovery of amputees and critical care patients by allowing them to take part in bed-based exercises.

Bedflex was designed after the Queen Elizabeth Birmingham Hospital Charity asked apprentices at BAE Systems to solve challenges faced by injured troops.

QEHB is the receiving hospital for injured and ill UK servicemen and women.

Jordan Hunter from the winning BAE Systems team said: “We are thrilled! The fact that Bedflex is getting so much attention and already helping people at QEHB means that it can go on to help hospital patients around the world.”

The Make it in Great Britain Challenge is a competition to seek out the next big pre-market products or ideas from across the UK. As part of the Challenge, all finalists of the Make it…Breakthrough category were put to a public vote ahead of the exhibition for the chance to be crowned the ‘People’s Choice’.

All entries can be seen at the Make it in Great Britain exhibition at the Science Museum, London, until 9 September 2012. For more details visit the Make it in Great Britain website.
