Skydivers take to the skies

July 12, 2012

Three Resuscitation Officers from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham will be taking to the skies this weekend to raise funds for hospital patients.

Team Resus – Tina Millward, Hannah Bryant and Mike Andrews – hope to raise at least £1,500 for the QEHB Charity. Their donation will be split between the Military Patients’ Fund and the hospital’s Cancer Appeal.

More than 20 people will be taking the plunge this Sunday, July 15, at the event organised by QEHB Charity.

“I’ve always wanted to do it,” says Tina who trains staff in resuscitation techniques, “And I thought, if I ever have the opportunity, I’ll do it for charity.”

Hannah agrees: “I’m excited and nervous at the same time but it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something really big.”

The event at Hinton Airfield in Northamptonshire is the second of three skydives organised this year by the hospital’s official charity. The first event in May proved so popular the charity organised more to accommodate demand.

The QE Cancer Appeal will help give patients access to the world’s most advanced radiotherapy treatment machines: TomoTherapy HD, which is already up and running and CyberKnife, an amazing non-invasive, pain-free alternative to open surgery.

The Military Patients’ Fund supports injured service men and women receiving treatment in the hospital. A range of projects includes everything from treating troops to their favourite cakes to building Fisher House, a £4.2 million ‘home away from home’ for military patients and their families.

“There was no question about where the money would go,” adds Tina, “We didn’t argue about it, we just knew”.
